Abisko Turiststation at the Torneträsk lake is a big STF "Fjällstation". It has almost 400 beds in different buildings and cabins. There are many reasons to come to Abisko. Probably most of the people go on the "classic" upper part of the Kungsleden and hike down to Kebnekaise. But already the surroundings, for instance the Abisko national park, are worth to stay some days or a few hours, and you can do a lot more than I mention here.
Abisko Turiststation is most easily reached by railroad, it has a stop of its own on the line between Kiruna and Narvik. Coming from Kiruna, don't get out too early at the small village Abisko Östra (East Abisko), where the train stops before reaching Abisko Turiststation. If you just travel with your car on the E10 to Narvik, you should at least take a break, walk around a little bit and have a look at the "Naturum", a small but fine exhibition. If you fly to Kiruna, you can use a bus right from the airport during summer season, the line ends in Riksgränsen.
The U-shaped valley is called "Lapporten", the door to Lappland. In the winter picture underneath Lapporten you can see the houses of the Abisko Research Station, which is not far away from the Turiststation.
The canyon of the Abisko river is a picturesque place and it is easily reached in a short walk at any time of the year. Other possibilities for excursions in summer are short hikes on the Kungsleden, into the Karsavagge valley, a ride with the nearby cableway to a viewpoint, or a boat tour on the Torneträsk lake.
You can send your bike to Abisko in summer and make some tours on the Rallarvägen, I did not try this so far. In winter the Tornetraesk is frozen. You can start cross country skiing tours on the Kungsleden from here, although Abisko itself has not so much snow. You can rent the equipment here. In 1995 we stayed some days in Abisko and took the train to Riksgränsen for skiing.
It is possible (and not a bad idea) to reserve a room when you come in the season. Just send a fax to +46 980 401 40 or call +46 980 402 00.
